- Hi,
-
- This argument perhaps really outlines a more glaring need in the
- OpenDoc community.
-
- As I see it the major advantage (not the only one, but the biggest)
- OpenDoc has over OLE is the extension mechanism. For OpenDoc to be
- really useful the parts developers write must be able to exchange
- information.
-
- Apple/IBM/CILabs/etc or the Internet community really need to develop
- a formalism for PUBLICLY standardizing Extensions and Data Types.
- Something akin to the RFC scheme used by the Internet. I've seen
- many part developers use the MIME types for their supported data
- types. This is a great idea now I can exchange data with these
- developers parts, but I also searched the Web for information on
- the standardized MIME types and found very little. What's needed
- is an Open System for discussing Extensions (the RFC scheme) and
- then a PUBLIC and Web viewable method for supplying these standards
- to the OpenDoc developer community.
-
- Another initiative needs to be started to better allow visibility
- of the supported extensions across a document, because hooking the
- extensions together currently seems almost as hard as agree on the
- format of the extension.
-
- Anyways, I'm sure I've overlooked a tremendous amount of important
- information, but wanted to add my 2 cents on where OpenDoc needs to
- improve.
-
- Great Job on everything I've seen so far.
